Shopping for beads at the Agomanya market

Our 2012 Ghana tour this December includes a visit to this market.

Taking a break from Bead shopping

The top of Krobo mountain

(sorry our tours do not include the hike to the top of the mountain.  For an added few days in Ghana it is possible to add further explorations into the Avatime hills and the surrounding villages with moderate hikes through the rainforest that border the country of Togo.  Call or send us an email for information about extending your trip.)

The town lies about 5 km west from Kpong on the Somanya road.  Market day is Wednesday and Saturday and well worth a visit.  The bead portion is in the middle down this road to the left.

The Beads
This area is considered to be the center of the Krobo bead industry.

The People

The Krobo came from a nearby mountain that we hiked up in 2008 during a big celebration for the Krobo people.

The Area

The Somanya road is a row of small towns travelling west for ten kilometers off the main Accra-Akosombo road so the area is convenient and on your way towards the Volta region.  It is very possible to leave Accra and visit the market and Cedi's bead factory and then travel on to Lake Volta for the night.  There are a number of hotels of all budget ranges near Atimpoku and towards Akosombo.

A restaurant that we like in the area is the Star Villa Hotel which coming from Accra is just before the Somanya road turn off for the Agomanya market and Cedi's Bead factory.
